Do I Really Need to Love my Job?
Tina Turner’s song What’s Love Got to Do with It, dissociated love and relationships. She sang about a relationship totally devoid of love and connection. Personally, I could not function that way. Love and relationship go together like horse & carriage, for me, you can’t have one without the other! But of course, this perspective changes depending on who you are having the discourse with.
I’d say the same applies to an individual who’s aspiring towards a career(s). You have to love what you do – it’s only logical! As I matured in life, I realized how important it was for me to have chosen something I loved and enjoyed doing. Some days I just didn’t want to show up at work. I was literally teaching or making a presentation and was so distracted or dazed out. Other days I worked until my husband called my phone, checking on my whereabouts and whether I had picked up the children from the after-school-care.
How Much is Too Much?
Trying to understand yourself, your values, morals, and what you really love matters greatly. When someone does what they love, it no longer feels like work. However, I caution students to create balanced and healthy work-life lifestyle. Because, passion can result in overworking and exhaustion. One peer-reviewed study titled “On the Role of Passion for Work in Burnout” shared how passion led to burnout . The field I studied in school for the career I am now in, was done out of love. It is a joy and passion to help those around me attain their objectives. Likewise, it is important to do what you believe you love, what gives you joy, and makes you feel fulfilled at the end of the day.
Imagine getting out of bed, getting dress, and commuting to a job where you will spend at least eight (8) hours working for the day to various tasks five (5) days each week.
you begin to think about your future, (which starts now) various career options might be coming to your mind. But before you begin to think about all the different careers at your disposal, ask yourself the question, what is it that I really love to do?
