Do I Really Need to Love my Job?
Well, if you’re going to be staying there for at least eight hours per day, what do you think? I think you gotta love it!
Tina Turner’s song What’s Love Got to Do with It, dissociated the need for genuine love to be present in a relationship. She downplayed the emotion as she belted her voice in the song describing a relationship totally devoid of love and connection. Personally, I could not function that way. Love has everything to do with it… Love and relationship go together like horse & carriage, for me, you can’t have one without the other! But of course, this perspective changes as per the subjects I engage in the discourse.
The same applies to an individual who’s aspiring towards a career. There must be some kind of interest in whatever it is the individual decides to do – it’s only logical. And note please, I am not referring to the “stop-gaps” works or casual employment someone does to occupy time until the right opportunity presents itself. Those are space-fillers until what one truly desire is available. I am talking about the permanent jobs
As I matured in life, I realized how important it was for me to have chosen something I loved and enjoyed doing. Imagine, I love my job, and some days I don’t feel like showing up for work. Other days I worked until they had to call my phone to remind me it’s time to go home.
How Much is Too Much?
Trying to understand yourself, your values, morals, and what you really love matters greatly. When someone does what they love, it no longer feels like work. However, I caution students to create balanced and healthy work-life lifestyle. Because, passion can result in overworking and exhaustion. One peer-reviewed study titled “On the Role of Passion for Work in Burnout” shared how passion led to burnout . The field I studied in school for the career I am now in, was done out of love. It is a joy and passion to help those around me attain their objectives. Likewise, it is important to do what you believe you love, what gives you joy, and makes you feel fulfilled at the end of the day.
Imagine getting out of bed, getting dress, and commuting to a job where you will spend at least eight hours working for the day and you repeat that for approximately four or five days each week.
Love surely has something to do with it – love matters!
